Protecting yourself · for cleaners

Staying safe on a job

You are going into a stranger's home alone. Some sensible rules.

Updated 2026-10-18

Most jobs are entirely uneventful. These rules are for the ones that are not.

Somebody should know where you are. The app has your day's work in it, with addresses and times. Tell a family member to look at it if they cannot reach you.

Access details unlock on the day. Not before. If a code is not working, message the host in the app rather than phoning a number from a listing.

If somebody is in the property when you arrive, do not go in. It should be empty. Message the host and wait outside until you know who they are.

If a place feels wrong, leave. A job is not worth it. Report it — you will not be penalised for leaving somewhere unsafe, and the same host will not catch somebody else out.

Chemicals. Never mix bleach with anything containing ammonia — that includes many glass cleaners. Open the windows. If a product is not labelled, do not use it.
