Why things go missing, and what to do about it

Teaspoons, blankets, heaters. How to know when something went, rather than that it went sometime.

Updated 2026-10-17

Things leave. Guests pack them by accident, borrow them between units, or take them. That is the cost of the business — but it becomes an argument when nobody can say *when* something went.

Count at the end of the clean, not the start. At the end the place is empty, everything has been handled, and the person counting is standing in the room. At the start, half of it is still under a guest's belongings.

Keep the list short and specific. "Kitchen things" is not countable. "3 teaspoons, 2 soup bowls, 1 spare duvet, 1 blanket, 1 heater" is.

Record it per clean. "The blanket went missing sometime" is not actionable. "It was there on the 3rd and gone on the 11th" tells you which stay to look at and whether to claim.

Decide who counts. Some hosts want the cleaner to do it as part of closing up; others check the place themselves. Either works — what does not work is assuming somebody did.

Thuso will not let a clean be marked finished with the count outstanding, where you have asked the cleaner to do it. That is deliberate: it is the last moment anybody is in the room.
